WhatsApp is making it harder for scammers and hackers to take over your account.
The messaging platform has announced a new set of security upgrades designed to give users more protection when logging in and more information when dealing with unfamiliar callers.
One of the biggest changes is an upgrade to two-step verification. WhatsApp is moving beyond its traditional six-digit PIN, allowing users to create longer passwords containing letters, numbers and special characters. That gives account owners another layer of protection even if someone manages to obtain their one-time verification code.

Passkeys are also getting an upgrade. WhatsApp says more than 1 billion people have already set up a passkey. Users who switch between Android and iOS devices can now add more than one passkey to their account, making it easier to authenticate with a fingerprint, face recognition or their device's screen-lock method.

But there's another change that could be especially useful for people who regularly receive suspicious calls.
On Android, WhatsApp will provide additional context when an unknown number calls. Users may see information such as whether the caller's number is from another country and whether they share groups with the caller. The idea is simple: give people more information before they decide whether to answer.

And WhatsApp isn't stopping there.
The company is also testing Scam Alert, an optional feature designed to identify potentially fraudulent messages using machine learning directly on the user's device. Meta says message content isn't sent to its servers for classification, allowing the feature to work alongside WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption.

For users, the message is straightforward: don't treat your WhatsApp account like an ordinary app login anymore.
Turn on stronger two-step verification, set up a passkey, and think twice before answering unexpected calls or following urgent requests from unfamiliar numbers.
As scams become increasingly convincing, WhatsApp is putting more security tools directly in users' hands. The real question now is whether people will actually use them.
